First Federal Savings Bank of Iowa
West Des Moines, IA
Client Challenge:
Design a full-service branch bank to complement the architectural theme of the Jordan Creek Crossing development in West Des Moines, Iowa
SVPA Solution:
With a blend of brick, stone, metal panels, and glass this 6,100 square foot banking facility was positioned close to the six-lane 68th Street in West Des Moines for a more urban experience. The lot design shields parking from the heavily traveled street. The modified L-shape design also gave the boardroom a prime view of the intersection of the two streets at the site. Reflecting the exterior colors and textures, the interior design brings an urban yet traditional scheme to the building. Clean lines and distinct patterns are emphasized throughout the interior design. Wall covering selections were chosen to enhance the feeling of light and openness as one enters the bank.

The Pomerantz Center, University of Iowa
Iowa City, Iowa
Client Challenge:
In a new building on a preselected site, provide for the diverse needs of multiple user groups; include general assignment classrooms and a 400-seat auditorium within the building’s footprint; build according to established university standards and criteria, which strictly limit the building’s height, width, square footage, materials, etc.
SVPA Solution:
Building design responded to the individual needs of the various user groups—Career Counseling and Placement Services, Academic Advising Center, Admissions Visitor’s Center, Executive MBA Program, MBA Career Services and Alumni Career Information Network. The five-story building employs special lighting techniques to channel natural light into office spaces not having direct window views. The auditorium was placed in the building’s lower level with strategic access to the heavily trafficked T. Anne Cleary pedestrian walkway. Sunshades, energy-efficient glass systems and the building envelope create a building that is up to 50 percent more energy efficient than required by the Energy Code.
